Great Harbors offers children as young as 3 years old the opportunity to learn how to independently swim. With levels one through six children learn the fundamental skills in order to swim confidently. Choosing a level that is appropriate for your child’s skill level is essential. If you are in need of help choosing what works best for your swimmer please reach out.

*Please note that all children must be potty trained in order to participate in swim lessons and use the big pool.

Level 1:

Level one introduces the necessary skills for young swimmer to feel confident within a body of water. Through encouragement and practice young swimmers will learn how to retrieve items from shallow areas of the pool, float on their back, and begin swimming with support of a kickboard.

  • Building confidence in the water

  • Front/Back kicking with kickboard

  • Retrieval of objects underwater

  • Practice holding breath/blowing bubbles

  • Front/Back streamline

  • Back float (supported)

  • Jumping from side of the pool into water

Level 2:

Level two introduces full stroke concepts with lessons directed toward correct breathing strategies and stroke techniques. Swimmers will be encouraged to jump into water on their own, retrieve items in deeper water, and begin to rely less on kickboard support when swimming.

  • Jump into water without dependence on adult

  • Retrieve object from underwater

  • Holding breath/Blowing bubbles

  • Arms and legs with help from kickboard

  • Practice correct breath technique

  • Floating on back (no support)

  • Unsupported front/back kicking with use of kickboard

  • Introduction to arm strokes

  • Front/Back streamline

Level 3:

Level three finalizes the back and front crawl and begins introducing butterfly and breaststroke as the four main strokes. Swimmers will learn how to tread water, swim underwater, and jump into the water to reach deeper sunken items.

  • Jump into water to retrieve objects

  • Front/Back Streamline

  • Treading Water

  • Front/Back Float

Level 4:

Level four completes the understanding of four main strokes and begins to work on correct breathing and swimming techniques. Swimmers work to prepare for more difficult concepts in level 5 by clearly understanding each stroke throughly.

  • Elementary Backstroke

  • Back/Front Streamlines

  • Treading Water

  • Retrieving items from underwater

  • Front/Back Float

Level 5:

Level 5 introduces flip turns and competitive swimming skills allowing swimmer to obtain clear understanding of how to safely and correct swim throughout bodies of water. Swimmers will practice with drills directed toward certain areas that must be worked on in order to become a successfull swimmer.

  • Butterfly

  • Elementary backstroke

  • Sidestroke

  • Treading Water

  • Flip Turns

  • Retrieving items from underwater

  • Front/Back Float

Level 6:

Level six finishes swimmers skill practice by practicing previously taught skills and working on drills to create a safe and succesful swimmer. Swimmers will also prepare for our Junior Lifeguarding course (if they wish to sign up) by collecting dive rings from deep sections of the pool and increasing stamina through strokes and treading water.
